Epidemiological surveillance framework in action

Objectives

Explicate the practical aspects of developing guidelines for setting up epidemiological surveillance in temporal and spatial scales beyond that of where/when a disease occurs. Highlight the generic practical aspects that are relevant to a wide range of pathosystems. This will be accomplished by contrasting case studies of 15 pathosystems that represent a range of epidemiological features (bacterial, fungal and viral diseases of perennial and annual crops, aerially disseminated and soil borne-pathogens with broad and narrow host ranges and with or without insect vectors, etc.).

Tasks

  • Revise detection methods to account for the a more comprehensive scope of diversity of pathogens that are targets of the BEYOND project
  • Revise the life history of pathogens targeted in the BEYOND project to account for their full scope of habitats and reservoirs.
  • Identify new indicators of risk from environmental variables across a range of space-time scales and from indirect observations of pathogens, vectors and disease. Add these to the list of indicators from direct observations.
  • Conceive epidemiological surveillance plans for the target patho-systems of BEYOND based on the new indicators.
  • Write case histories of epidemiological surveillance plans for each patho-system of the BEYOND project to contrast the differences in plans based on direct/near indicators vs. those based on indirect/far indicators.
  • Via indirect modeling, assess the performance of old and new epidemiological surveillance strategies and the concomitant prophylaxis for at least one case study
